AI Image Generators Compared: Midjourney, ChatGPT Images, Stable Diffusion and Ideogram

"Which AI image generator is best?" has no single answer, because the leading tools are built for different people. Midjourney is a subscription art studio. Image generation in ChatGPT is a conversational editor inside a general assistant. Stable Diffusion is a family of open models you can run yourself. Ideogram is a design-focused service with a strong emphasis on graphics and layouts. This comparison explains how each one works, what it costs and where it fits, based on official documentation as of October 2026.

First, an update on DALL·E

Many comparisons still list "DALL·E" as OpenAI's image tool. That is out of date. According to OpenAI's help centre, image creation in ChatGPT now runs on ChatGPT Images, and OpenAI retired the official DALL·E GPT in ChatGPT on 30 August 2026. If you want OpenAI's image generation today, you use it directly in a normal ChatGPT conversation. We refer to it below as "ChatGPT Images (formerly DALL·E)".

The four tools at a glance

  • Midjourney: paid subscription, used through Midjourney's own interface and Discord; known for a distinctive, polished aesthetic; also generates short videos.
  • ChatGPT Images: included on all ChatGPT plans, with tighter limits on Free; you describe or upload an image and refine it in conversation.
  • Stable Diffusion: open-weight models from Stability AI that you can download and run locally or through third-party apps; free for individuals and organisations under $1 million in annual revenue under the Community License.
  • Ideogram: web app with free and paid plans, current models listed as Ideogram 4.5 and 4.0, and design-oriented tools such as editable text layers, an ad resizer and a background remover.

Midjourney

How it works

You write a prompt and Midjourney returns a set of images you can vary, upscale or edit. Its plan comparison mentions both image and video generation and the option to work solo in Discord direct messages.

Pricing (October 2026)

Midjourney's official plan comparison lists four tiers: Basic $10/month, Standard $30/month, Pro $60/month and Mega $120/month, with a 20% discount for annual billing ($8, $24, $48 and $96 per month respectively). Basic includes about 3.3 hours of "Fast" GPU time per month; Standard and above add unlimited "Relax" image generations. Unlimited Relax video generation is on Pro and Mega. Extra GPU time is $4 per hour.

Licensing and privacy

By default, images are visible in the community gallery. Stealth Mode, which keeps your images and videos private, is only available on Pro and Mega. Midjourney's terms, as summarised on the plan page, let subscribers use their outputs in "just about any way", but companies with more than $1,000,000 in gross annual revenue must be on Pro or Mega.

Best for

Concept art, mood boards, illustration and stylised visuals where look and feel matter more than precise layout.

ChatGPT Images (formerly DALL·E)

How it works

You ask ChatGPT to create an image in a conversation, or upload an image and describe the changes you want. OpenAI's help centre says it can add text, add details within the image and make backgrounds transparent. Because it sits inside a chat, you can refine an image step by step in plain language ("make the background darker, keep the logo the same").

Pricing

ChatGPT Images is available on all ChatGPT tiers. "Images with thinking", which plans and refines outputs before generating, is listed for Plus, Pro and Business. ChatGPT's US plans are Free, Go ($8/month), Plus ($20/month) and Pro ($100 to $500/month). OpenAI does not publish fixed image counts for each plan, so expect limits to vary.

Best for

Quick visuals for presentations, social posts and blog headers, image edits from a description, and people who already use ChatGPT and want one tool for text and images.

Stable Diffusion

How it works

Stable Diffusion is not a single app. It is a family of models released by Stability AI with downloadable weights (for example, Stable Diffusion 3.5 on Hugging Face). You can run it on your own computer with a capable graphics card, use it through community interfaces, or access it via hosted services and APIs. This makes it the most flexible option and the most technical.

Licensing

Stability AI's Community License allows free research, non-commercial and commercial use for individuals and organisations with less than $1 million in total annual revenue. Commercial users must register with Stability AI, and organisations above the threshold need an Enterprise licence. Read the current licence on Stability AI's site before commercial use; terms differ by model.

Best for

Developers, technical artists and businesses that want control: running offline, fine-tuning on their own images, building custom pipelines or keeping data on their own hardware.

Ideogram

How it works

Ideogram is a web-based generator that positions itself around design work. Its site lists tools such as Ad Resizer, Background Remover, Colorways, Material Swap and Object Remover, plus editable text layers and custom image models. That makes it useful for posters, social graphics, merchandise and anything combining images and words.

Pricing (October 2026)

Ideogram's pricing page lists a Free plan; Plus at $20/month ($15/month billed annually, $180/year); Pro at $60/month ($42/month billed annually, $504/year); and a Team plan at $30 per user per month ($20 billed annually). Enterprise pricing is custom.

Licensing and privacy

Ideogram's FAQ says it does not claim ownership of your generated images and that you can use them for any purpose, including commercial use. Private generation is listed as a paid feature.

Best for

Marketers, small businesses and print-on-demand sellers who need graphics with readable text and layout variations.

How to choose: match the tool to the job

  • You want striking artistic images and do not mind paying: Midjourney.
  • You already pay for ChatGPT and need occasional visuals or edits: ChatGPT Images.
  • You need control, privacy on your own hardware, or custom training: Stable Diffusion.
  • You make marketing graphics, posters or product mock-ups with text: Ideogram.
  • You need images that integrate with professional design software: also consider Adobe Firefly, which Adobe positions for commercial use and builds into Photoshop and other Creative Cloud apps.

A fair way to compare them yourself

  1. Write three prompts that reflect real work: one photographic scene, one illustration, and one graphic with a short headline.
  2. Use the same wording in each tool, then do one round of refinement.
  3. Judge on accuracy to the brief, text legibility, consistency across variations, and how much editing you still need.
  4. Check the licence and privacy terms for your actual use (client work, products for sale, internal use).

Legal and ethical points that apply to every tool

  • Do not imitate living artists or trademarks in commercial work. Even where a tool allows it, it can create legal and reputational risk.
  • Be careful with real people. Most services restrict realistic images of public figures, and creating deceptive images of anyone can be unlawful.
  • Disclose AI imagery where your audience would reasonably expect to know, such as news, product photos or testimonials.
  • Copyright is unsettled. In several jurisdictions, purely AI-generated images may not qualify for copyright protection. If owning the image matters, seek legal advice for your country.

Bottom line

Midjourney leads on aesthetics for a subscription fee, ChatGPT Images is the most convenient for conversational editing, Stable Diffusion offers unmatched control for technical users, and Ideogram is strong for design work with text.
