Overview

OpenAccounters provides a free plugin that lets large‑language‑model assistants answer tax questions using a library of “skills” written by professional accountants. The plugin can be added in a single step to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Cursor or Slack, after which the AI's responses are drawn from those skills rather than from its own memory. Each skill contains the exact tax rate, threshold or deadline, the article of law it comes from, the tax year it applies to and the name of the accountant who authored or reviewed it.
The tool is aimed at developers who embed AI chat in products, finance teams that want to automate routine tax queries, and small businesses that need reliable tax information across many countries. When a user asks a question such as “How much tax do I owe on rental income in Malta?”, the AI looks up the Malta rental‑income skill, extracts the relevant figures (for example a 15 % flat rate or progressive rates after expenses), and returns the calculation together with the source citation and the skill version. The output includes the applicable form (e.g., Form TA24) and filing deadline, so the user sees both the numeric answer and the procedural step required. Because every skill follows the same structure, the plugin works the same way for any of the 274 jurisdictions covered.
If the free library does not contain a needed rule, OpenAccountants offers two paid pathways. First, you can engage a named accountant who will be legally responsible for any filing you submit through the service. Second, you can have the company automate an entire finance team, handling bookkeeping, VAT and month‑end close while keeping the audit file ready all year. Both options rely on the same skill‑based engine, but they add a human sign‑off or an end‑to‑end automation layer. The website notes that the project has been open since April 2026, has assisted more than 1,194 users, answered over 6,000 tax questions through AI and holds 468 stars on GitHub, indicating an active open‑source community.
The plugin's workflow is straightforward: install, let the AI query the skill library, and receive answers that include the legal citation and the accountant's name.
