Overview

hum to search (humtosearch.dev) is a web-based song finder for the tune that is stuck in your head. You hum, sing or whistle the melody you remember, or record or upload a clip of the actual song, and the site returns possible song candidates with title and artist for you to confirm by listening. It works in the browser, with no app to install.
Two recognition modes
Hum or sing is for when you remember how the song goes but cannot play it. You do not need lyrics or the original key; what matters is the shape of the melody, how the notes rise, fall and repeat. It does not accept spoken descriptions or lyric sentences.
Play a recording is for when the real song is available, such as music playing in a café, at an event or from a file on your phone. You record through the microphone or upload a clip, ideally a section where music is louder than conversation or traffic. This mode only matches original recordings.
Getting a good match
The site gives practical advice: aim for an 8 to 12-second sample (anything under 6 seconds is too short to send), pick a recognisable phrase such as the chorus or hook, keep a steady tempo, move away from TVs and fans, and sing in a comfortable range. The browser checks basic things like audible sound and length before sending. Humming can return several plausible candidates because songs sometimes share a phrase, so the site suggests checking alternatives and trying another section if nothing fits. Microphone access only starts after you press record, and the site states that audio is not stored.
Pricing
From the pricing page, checked October 2026, the site uses one-time credit packs with no subscription or automatic renewal:
- 50 credits: $1.00, about $0.02 per search.
- 100 credits: $1.49, about $0.015 per search.
Each completed search costs 1 credit in either mode, whether or not it finds a match. Technical errors return the credit, and audio rejected before sending does not use one. New visitors get one free eligible search without signing in.
Who it suits
Anyone trying to name a half-remembered melody, and people who want a quick way to identify a song playing nearby from the browser.
Pros: works from humming, singing or whistling; very low per-search cost with no subscription; clear tips for better samples.
Cons: a no-match result still uses a credit; humming may return several candidates; only one free search.
